Maria Serveta was a Senior Audience Researcher at the Science Museum Group (SMG) whose work focused exclusively on research with Early Years children. Her role has been taken over by Lauren Souter.
Throughout 2021, Maria led a bespoke research project, in collaboration with University College London (UCL), on how young children engage with museum objects from the Science Museum collections in London. Some of the themes she has particularly researched include: the importance of play in museums, the links between scientific and cultural citizenship in the Early Years, and empowering educators and grown-ups to better support children’s interests in STEM.
In this week’s interview, we discuss Maria’s bespoke research project at the Science Museum in London, in collaboration with UCL, its aims of the project and the research itself.
Maria explains how her evidence and results link play with learning and give some great strategies for adults – parents, teachers, educators – to use that deepen young children’s engagement and learning with STEM museum objects.
